In BC, screening mammograms are available every two years for people aged 40 and older (including 40 to 49, 50 to 74, and 75+ in good health). Your physician can help you decide based on your personal risk.

For a screening mammogram, no. You can self-refer directly to a BC Cancer Breast Screening centre by calling 1-800-663-9203. For a diagnostic mammogram to check a specific concern, your physician provides an order.

Imaging is done at a screening or diagnostic centre. Our physicians assess your breast health, discuss screening, and arrange or order imaging as needed.

At the centre, each breast is briefly compressed between two plates while images are taken. You may feel brief pressure or discomfort, but it does not last long.

Results are sent to your provider. We will follow up with you and arrange any further tests if something needs a closer look.
